Our Food Service team has been working hard to ensure all students are receiving delicious, nutritionally balanced meals while increasing student participation rates and taking advantage of USDA offered “entitlement dollars” to purchase commodity items and fresh fruits and vegetables. Entitlement dollars benefit both the farmer and the school district by supplementing the farmer and giving the schools the opportunity to decrease food costs. These “dollars” are determined by the previous years’ students meal participation rate. The higher the participation rate, the higher the entitlement offering the following school year. Sami Stimpert, the Nutrition and Food Services Coordinator, reviews weekly food orders ensuring the district is selecting the best product at the best value. We have been greatly utilizing the entitlement dollars, which is reducing the actual cost of the student meals for the district.

Suzanne Holland, Nutrition and Food Services Supervisor, says, “Our goal is to increase participation by producing and serving great food, while reducing our costs.” All the kitchens have made changes to see this happen, aiming to serve students hot, delicious meals that make them want to come back and eat more. “I’m proud of the staff,” Holland states. “They are working really hard to produce meals that the kids like and want to come back for. There are new processes, new paperwork, new systems – we’re asking them to step up, and they are.”
