Senior welding students had the opportunity to tour Washington State Community College’s welding program on March 5. This tour was facilitated by the welding instructor, Roberta Maxwell. The students toured the welding, robotics, machines, and diesel labs discussing the types of welding and brazing used. The students utilized the Lincoln Electric Simulator, a virtual reality welding simulator, and scored higher than most welders utilizing the equipment.

In class, the students are learning about correct power voltages, metals, and consumables, including pipe welding, reading blueprints, and testing for their AWS certification. More than 30 different types of welding exist, and they range from simple oxy-fuel to high-tech processes such as laser beam welding. While there are all of these different types of welding, there are only four types that are commonly used: MIG, TIG, Stick, and Flux-Cored arc welding.
